Last Night, Part 2

Last night (Sunday, March 25th), Bob, one of the GER professors, stopped by the seating area that a group of us were in. Somehow, we started talking about the Czech way of viewing things. One thing that he said really struck me:

"It is so interesting to be in a culture that has no interest at all in controlling anything other than what it already has."

I thought about this a lot. And it really does make sense. After centuries of oppression, the Czechs really only want to have control over their own lives, their own property, their own country. As people who have experienced the negatives of occupation, they have no interest in doing the same to everyone else. This would explain the reserved introversion that most Czechs display.

I think that as Americans we have a completely different view than the Czechs because we have only had to deal with oppression once, and we threw a fit and got what we wanted. We have always had the resources and manpower to control our (huge) country.
